Choosing the knife design.

The most important part of selecting a knife is deciding on what you are going to use it for. For instance;

The all purpose camp knife will be used for cutting material, food, tree limbs and everything else you can think of. This knife should be thick, sharp with a strong point and on average a 4” blade. A good camp knife is essential in survival times. If you become lost and have your knife with you, find a big rock, you now have the ability to split wood for a fire.

Skinning knives are for skinning animals and are a little thinner than a camp knife to keep a sharp edge longer. The point will traditionally be rounder, thinner metal and not as long as a camp knife.

Capping knives are smaller yet and have a finer point for separating the hide from the skull of an animal. The knife needs to get into tighter places than that of a skinning knife.

Fillet knives are the thinnest knives with the longest and sharpest edges for filleting birds or fish.

Bowie knives and fighting knives are more for self defense that multi-purpose use. They also provide more area to engrave larger images.

Folding knives are useful around the camp or as a day to day pocket knife.
